My bookshelves are stuffed with so many great books, but for this post I’m going to share 4 of them that I really thought were fantastic but perhaps not well known. If you are like me, reading is one of your favorite leisure time activities. I was probably one of the easiest teens to buy a gift for; a book or gift certificate to the nearest bookstore. My mom started a tradition of buying me a Stephen King book every single birthday and Christmas. I am a huge Stephen King fan! “Cujo” started my obsession; “Salem’s Lot” clinched it.
However, with that said, I read just about every genre of book there is. Nothing is off limits to me. So now, I’m going to share with you 4 books off my personal bookshelf that will hopefully pique your interest to grab a book and read. If you do, I’d absolutely love to hear your thoughts! I might make this a quarterly post with 4 new books to check out! If you’d like to see that, comment YES! Without further adieu, here are my picks for this round!
Feel Good / Love Story
I admit it. I am a sucker for anything romantic. Movies, books, videos, music or listening to real life stories. Moreover, if anything even remotely romantic happens to me, I’m on cloud 9 for weeks. More than likely, longer. So this book loaned to me by a close friend of mine, was right up my alley.
The Breakaway by Jennifer Weiner is a lighthearted, realistic story about a thirty-something single lady trying to navigate life. Furthermore, I enjoyed the main character being more identifiable by many women because she is plus size. It was fun to get to know the main character, Abby, with all her quirks and strong characteristics. In addition, to following her through relationship issues with family, and trying to find her niche in life, the romance she accidentally stumbles into kept me intrigued. I don’t want to give away anything but if you like love stories and a lighthearted read, this is the book for you!
Horror
As I shared above, I’m a big horror fan. I love horror movies, creepy podcasts, frightening books, and scary videos. Although, I am also the biggest chicken while enjoying them. Just a personal tidbit, my boys decided to quit watching scary movies with me because I jumped so much I’d scare the tar out of them. More than the movie did. Even though I watch movies behind the comfort of my favorite pillow, I do truly love the eerie, spooky and terrifying.
This book I found on Facebook. I followed the author and decided to give it a try. Indeed, if you like horror, this book is for you. Jones 1963 by Devin Cabrera. Not a huge book, it only took me a couple of nights reading in bed to get through it, albeit reading it before trying to go to sleep probably wasn’t the best idea. I, oddly, found myself sympathizing with the killer more than his victims. The story line was intense, brutal and horrifying. Definitely not for the faint of heart!
Sci-Fy / Horror / Suspense
This book I stumbled upon while browsing the ThriftBooks app. Of course, I’m always on the look for books that pique my interest. Even though I have a dozen or so books that I haven’t read yet, I’m always on the prowl. It’s an addiction, I swear. But I digress. I must profess that I really got it because I have family in the Pacific Northwest and not only am I a horror fan, I really like the unexplained as well.
This book took me in a direction I was really not prepared for. Not sure what to expect, I was intrigued from the start. It comes across as a non-fiction writing which was a great touch. In addition, I was able to really picture the surroundings, the isolation, the fear and curiosity of the people in this little “town”. To be isolated, in the midst of a natural disaster, and facing an unknown predator would be the most terrifying experience ever. Highly recommended!
Non-Fiction / Unexplained / Investigative
Okay, I am seeing a trend here. I’m a little weird. The unexplained and creepy is my favorite genre of books. Again, it’s all Stephen King’s fault. Horror and the mysterious hooked me. Consequently, I heard about a series of books, written by a former police officer, regarding missing people. Of course, I had to buy one and try it out. See what the hype was. Disappointed I was not!
Written as if you were reading the investigation notes, it’s a unique way to read about such sad and seemingly common disappearances. David Paulides doesn’t come right out and say his theory in the books of what he thinks is causing these “clusters” of missing people. Illustrated by his research, Paulides does a great job of pointing out how he went about collecting the cases he included in the books. I ended up purchasing 6 of the 12 books available.
